Barbara Ellison

Barbara Ellison is an award-winning artist/composer whose work explores the ghostly presence and substance of sound and visuals. Her practice is centered around the concept of "sonic phantoms," a theme she delves into in her critically acclaimed book Sonic Phantoms (Bloomsbury Press). Ellison's compositions examine auditory and visual ambiguity, using materials that foster a creative apophenia, inviting a "phantasmatic" presence. Her works, including CyberSongs (Unsounds Records) and Cyber-Opera, have been presented internationally in live performances, installations, and radio shows. Ellison’s practice spans a range of mediums, including film, installation, sculpture, drawing, and live performance. She is interested in ritual and repetition, creating hypnotic, ritualistic structures through sound-producing actions. Improvisation plays a key role in her process, allowing her to explore and shape these sonic experiences.
