Marine melodies: Inside the battle against oceanic noise pollution

Marine melodies: Inside the battle against oceanic noise pollution

The ocean is one of the most unimaginable spaces that man cannot fully reach. It’s like an isolated, alien space. The humans explored some of the oceans’ depth but about 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. For many seen as a silent world, the ocean is, in reality filled with noise pollution that is a serious threat. This issue has gained attention in recent years, as research reveals that underwater noise pollution not only harms marine life but may also have subtle, long-term effects on humans. Some researchers are questioning how these sounds might be affecting us on a subconscious level....

Credits

Environmental and anthropogenic noises: > Explosions from volcano eruptions: low hits with a long reverb tail > Wind whistle > Earthquakes: metal rattle > Dropping anchor into the water: Firework like sounds and explosions > Sounds of heavy ships and vehicles > Piercing sounds of drilling > Seismic (oils and gas) bloops For all sounds, I applied extensive EQ and volume automation, particularly for low-pass filter. The mix is created in the 5th-order Ambisonics using IEM plugins, with the main focus on creating sensation of depth when diving deeper into the ocean. Credits I would like to thank Alla Evdokimova, Nina Virant, the two singers from "Las" project, who I met and recorded in The Netherlands in 2019. Mixing in 5th order Ambisonics in "Produktionsstudio" at IEM.
