In 2015, in parallel with my "My Favorite Thing"-project and immediately following a proto-piece based on emergent behaviour ((herd)STUDY for sinfonietta), I worked on a piece for flutist Yumi Murakami that wound up turning into a compositional technique that I have used a lot since then. By imitating herself as best she could through immediate reactions to innumerable recordings of herself, she produced an extensive round of “Chinese Whispers”. The result is an ever evolving, and organic movement of sounds; an emerging shape appears.
