Main Selection

The ZKM | Hertzlab is the research laboratory of the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe. It works at the interface of art, technology, and society, focusing on artistic and technological development. The transdisciplinary team creates installations, performances, instruments, software, and immersive sound spaces. ZKM | Hertzlab manages international residency programs, develops new performance formats, and enables artistic research beyond disciplinary boundaries. With the TURNS series, a space for speculative sound experiments was created in 2024 in the sound dome of the ZKM KUBUS. This playlist, curated by Dr Lea Luka Sikau and Götz Dipper, continues TURNS in virtual space and brings together formative compositions of the Klangdom with exciting young artists, with some tracks focusing on field recordings.

Giga-Hertz Award 2025

The Giga-Hertz Award 2025 celebrates visionary approaches in electronic and electroacoustic music under the theme “Fellow Futures.” Two Production Awards invite composers, sound artists, and artist-researchers to create new works engaging with the politics of listening and amplifying diverse voices. The Pop Experimental Production Award honors cross-genre works connecting experimental sound and contemporary pop culture. Both prizes support productions at the ZKM | Hertzlab, SWR Experimentalstudio, and Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, premiering at ZKM | KUBUS in 2026. The Sounding Future Track Selection features artists shortlisted for these awards. The Giga-Hertz Lifetime Achievement Award honors Laetitia Sonami, whose sensor-based instruments and embodied performances have redefined the relationship between body, technology, and sound.

TURNS: ECO / EXO?

The concert series by ZKM | Hertzlab called TURNS at the KUBUS creates immersive listening experiences that transform our perspective on sound. Once a month, we invite you to explore new perspectives on electronic music, sound art, and Sound Art in the sound dome. International and local artists encourage us to expand our understanding of music – through performances, participatory installations, and interactive formats. In the concert series TURNS, curated by Dr. Lea Luka Sikau, minerals become a chorus, gamers become performers, and quanta become sound. With a new spatial stage, the audience is placed at the center. A place of shared experience is created where people can encounter one another anew and explore sound in a playful manner. TURNS is structured around thematic cycles. They combine societal discourse, artistic research, and musical expression into immersive experiences, with process and collective experimentation at the forefront.
